Everton vs Newcastle – Premier League preview: Prediction, odds, how to watch on TV and live stream
Everton looked to be subverting the script on Sunday – until Virgil van Dijk’s volley somehow hit the bar twice, bamboozling Jordan Pickford and leading to the all-important winner for Liverpool.
There’s nothing than can console a team after such a derby defeat, but what will have come closest is the way the Toffees performed. They took a well-deserved point from Stamford Bridge, and really should have at Anfield. Marco Silva’s side are showing they can compete tactically with the best teams in the league.
Rafa Benitez has had a lot less to work with, but continues to raise Newcastle’s levels nonetheless. Before an underwhelming 3-0 defeat to West Ham on Saturday the Magpies had won three on the bounce. Owner Mike Ashley has been in talks to sell the club again in the last week. After a summer where Newcastle’s net spend was just £2m the news will encourage the Toon who have been crying out for more investment into the club since last season.

Player to watch:
Yerry Mina. He momentarily broke England hearts at the World Cup this summer and he’s in a dominant mood again with his new club Everton. The defender won man of the match on his debut at Stamford Bridge, and has proved worth the wait after he missed the start of the season. The Colombian is assertive in the air and even loves a goal; he scored three in four games at the World Cup from centre back. Everton were awful at the back last season, but Mina alongside Michael Keane is a defensive partnership with strength and technical ability.
