Australia is in for a long and hot summer this year.

So for those living in a house without air conditioning it’s going to be tough trying to find ways to escape the humid, sticky weather.

But one mother from Queensland has come up with a cheap Kmart hack to solve the problem for babies – and the answer lies within the retailer’s pet section.

One mother from Queensland has developed a cheap Kmart hack to solve the problem for small children and the answers lies within the retailer’s pet section

Uploading a picture of her child to a Facebook group, Kacey-Leigh Macdonald said a special ‘cooling mat’ was the answer to her problems.

‘Comes in handy for a cranky bub on hot days,’ she said.

The water-patterned mat is actually meant to cool down household pets but in this case can be used on a grumpy child.

Kmart states that the mat contains a cooling gel rather than water or ice you have to freeze. There is also no electricity required.

It works by absorbing body heat and dissipating it around the mat, chilling the occupant on it

Mothers were excited by Ms Macdonald’s discovery and said it could also work on swollen feet and ankles in the summer time.

It’s currently in stock online and comes in a large size, which is $20, and a small size, which is $12.

For adults not able to fit on the mat there are a few extra things you can do to keep your temperature low.

Wearing cotton and applying a cold press to your pressure points at the wrists, neck, elbows, ankles and behind the knees will work a treat.
